Exploring motherhood, matrescence and human connection through artistic storytelling

"I was struck by the openness and honesty that Alina Pullen is presenting in this work. And to me, that is something that is not only invaluable to her creative process as an artist but also to her audience. No scene in this selection, in my opinion, has the uniformly “classic” sense of beauty. And in my mind, that is what makes the work resonant. "- Lens Culture Review

Alina Pullen, a photographer based in London, is working with brands, creatives and private clients, illustrating genuine human connection, honesty of motherhood and female body, and love in its many ways. She works on documentary projects and exhibits her work in London and worldwide.

Alina's work focuses on the perspectives of motherhood in the UK, capturing the stories of mothers and their unique viewpoints. When she became a mother herself, she found the experience to be isolating and overwhelming. Living in a foreign country without the support of friends or family, she faced the challenge of not only caring for a newborn but also navigating her own transformation. Her body had changed, her identity had shifted, and her entire worldview felt unfamiliar. It was as though the ground beneath her feet was constantly moving, and she was unsure of anything. Overwhelmed by parenting books and the internet, she struggled with physical pain and a sense of loss, wondering if she would ever regain her sense of balance.

When her son was five months old, she decided to take self-portraits with him, documenting her changed body and their growing bond. In a serendipitous moment, her son began to nurse during the shoot, leading her to capture the intimate yet difficult aspect of breastfeeding. The images, dark and moody, perfectly encapsulated the complex relationship she had with nursing. Through this process, she saw her connection with her baby, her aching body, and the parts of herself she had deemed unlovable in a new light. This experience allowed her to recognize the beauty in it all.

Motherhood photography became her path to healing, self-discovery, and connection with other mothers, enabling her to share their stories as well. Over the past three years, her work has been featured in Photo Vogue, exhibited at the London Photo Show at the OXO Tower, selected and published by the British Journal of Photography in their Portrait of Humanity Vol. 6, and showcased in Dehazed and Iconic magazines.
